Thirty years ago Janie Ohler opened Larenas Bridal & Formal Wear in Somerset.

On Friday, February 1, 2012 Ohler will step away as her daughter Marcy McVicker will run the business.

“I’m happy to be able to take over the business that my mom started,” she said. “It will continue as a family affair with support from my husband, Bob, and hands-on help from my daughters Jenna and Elle.”

Ohler started the business in October 1983. She wanted to own a bridal store even though she had no experience in retail. Her first location was in the Penn Furniture building on the Diamond in Somerset.

Six years later she built onto her husband William Ohler’s auto parts store, which is the current location along North Center Avenue.

Ohler said she plans to help out during prom season, but she has plans to travel during her retirement.

McVicker, who serves as the store manager, has always helped with the store. Two years ago she decided to work there full time in anticipation of taking over this year.

“It is with a little bit of anxiousness and nervousness,” she said.

McVicker said she does not plan to make any big changes. She would like to increase the store’s Internet presence.

“It’s by the grace of God that we are still here,” she said.

Ohler said when the larger chain stores began opening, it affected her business; however, she began to strengthen her focus on tuxedo rentals and prom gowns. She thanks her customers for continuing to support her store over the years.

“We owe everything to our customers,” she said.
